Banzai! The Complete Guide to Sake - Part 2
By: Logan B. 10/28/08Welcome to part 2 of Banzai! The Complete Guide to Sake. If you haven't seen part 1 yet, read this first.
Never pour your own glass. Now, this is how we live our lives in general but when you're drinking sake, it's the rule. It's custom to have your partner, or dinner companions, or in our case Nikki Fukiyama pour it out for you. Not only is it tradition but it's a lot of fun. Remember that sharing is caring and when you shoot sake never forget to say:
Campai, the Japanese form of cheers. If you're sitting at the sushi bar, raise your glass to the chefs and give them a happy campai, they'll return the cheer and you've just made new drinking buddies. There's been times when a simple Campai to the staff has led to late hours after hours of drinking and many, many of the following:
Sake Bombs, a little slice of Japanese heaven here in the 'Sco. Now, sure we've discussed Irish car bombs, Mexican submarines and depth charges in other articles but the sake bomb is a special creature with its own pomp and ceremony. If you've never had one then prepare for some of the most fun you can have drinking with your buddies without getting arrested for indecent exposure.
First, take a pint glass half full with some kind of Japanese beer - Sapporo or Asahi works fine. Then place a pair of chopsticks on top of the pint glass and balance a glass of sake on top of that. On the count of 3, everyone at the table starts pounding their fists, a growing crescendo of boozing thunder reaches its zenith with a guttural roar of Sake BOMB!!!! Fists are slammed down hard and the sake falls into the pint glass, immediately to be consumed by one soon to be very happy Gaijin.
