This past monday, November 9th, the much-anticipated Agura opened itself to the public. Agura is a high-end izakaya chain in Japan, and this is its first US outpost which will be serving a completely different menu with a focus on Japanese-French fusion. The restaurant is inspired by the Izakaya style drink spots of Japan. Agura means ‘to sit cross legged on the floor’ in Japanese, and in the case of Agura Restaurant, located in West Hollywood, it also means sitting on specially made Japanese washi paper in the exclusive Tatami room (if you wish, of course). Chair or comfortable couch sitting will also be options.
The building used to be a church, something the owners have made good use of in terms of decor. The interior of Agura, much like the food, mixes Japanese and French influences, like Rococo chandeliers and the thirteen foot golden Buddha which serves as the centerpiece of the restaurant. A fresco painted dining patio is also included in the restaurant with a view of both the sushi bar and the popular boulevard.
The menu at Agura is wildly adventurous: sample the Collagen Terrine, described as "skin-nourishing pork gelee, umami balsamic and lemon sauce". Uh...well, if you're in the mood for something a little less bizarre, try the Curried Colorado Lamb, Dry Gin Lobster, or choose from a variety of fresh sushi and sashimi. The cocktail menu is just as creative, offering creations like the Shiso Cucumber Mojito or the Honey Basil Margarita.
GetWize: Agura offers a late-night happy hour from 10:00pm to Midnight at the bar and outside patio. Agura is located at 514 N. La Cienega Blvd. in West Hollywood. For more information, check their website or call them at (310) 289-1940.
