34th Annual Castro Street Fair - Preview
By: Barbara Rockwell 10/03/07This Sunday afternoon, if the burning man madness of Decompression doesn't interest you, join the crowds flocking to the heart of the Castro district for the annual Castro Street Fair. The major community celebration, now in its 34th year, offers loads of arts and crafts, retail goods, food, drinks, music and dancing.
The Castro Street Fair, started by Harvey Milk in 1974, is truly a San Francisco cultural tradition. This year, over a hundred arts and craft vendors and supporting retailers will be setting up shop on the neighborhood’s streets to ply their wares. For craft highlights, check out the “Best of Show” area on Castro Street between 18th and 19th Streets. Community groups are also an important presence, with dozens lining Market Street to provide information and promote community support.
The fair also keeps the masses happy with live music and entertainment. DJs spin at popular all-day dance pavilions, and a stage show features local emcees and singers. To satisfy the appetite you work up by all that dancing, there’ll be plenty of food and drink vendors serving everything from kebabs and beer to apple pie and coffee.
With all this merchandise, food, music and dancing, the last hurrah of San Francisco’s street fair season promises to be a good one.
