If you're looking for simple foods that boast robust flavors, Andalu is the place to go. Andalu serves small plates, or tapas, in a casual and festive atmosphere. A large open space on two floors, the restaurant was recently awarded Best Mission Restaurant and Best Restaurant for Groups in a 2007 Citysearch survey, and the New York Times has praised the food as "supremely eclectic … and hearty." And you know if the Times likes the food that much, you will too.
Andalu serves an array of tapas and small plates that are simple yet sublimely savory. The experience at Andalu is best when a group, big or small, is involved. The atmosphere at Andalu is a combination is chic and casual. Linen tablecloths mixed with square china and colorful, loud artwork give the restaurant an impressively relaxed feel. Black-coat attire would feel out of place here, as well as jeans and sneakers. Diners dress chicly, yet comfortably, making this a great spot to take a date or a group of friends. Andalu chefs take simple flavors and ingredients and combine them in ways that are fun and fresh. Small plates replace entrée options, so splitting and sharing is encouraged. The Ahi Tartar Tacos are surprisingly cool and crisp, with a mild mango salsa that sets them apart from ordinary tacos. The Pear and Persimmon Salad with Candied Pecans and Pomegranate, drizzled with champagne vinaigrette, is the perfect mix of sweet and tangy. Great crowd pleasers are the completely indulgent crispy Mac and Cheese and Pork Tenderloin Wrapped in Bacon with a Port Wine Reduction. Don’t expect to be served a plate of mac and cheese like your mother made—this version fries it, creating servings that are crispy and without being greasy. As for the Pork Tenderloin, they’re so decadent that you may feel inclined to order two rounds. For dessert, try the Warm Apple and Huckleberry Crisp with Vanilla Ice Cream. Order it with a serving of espresso—a great way to end the meal.
The wine list at Andalu has a good mix of varieties. If you’re not sure what to order, the wine flights are an ideal way to sample different pinots, sauvignon blancs, Italian wines and Spanish wines. Half bottles are also available, as well as the glasses and full bottles.
Andalu takes reservations and can get busy, so be sure to call ahead on busy weekends. If you don’t have a reservation, try to get in anyway, or choose to sit at the bar. Andalu has a full bar and enough room to order a few small plates. For more information, visit them on the web: http://www.andalusf.com.
