Bazaar Bizarre San Francisco - Craft Fair With Flair

Think crafts aren't cool? Well, think again. The first annual Bazaar Bizarre San Francisco hits Golden Gate Park this Saturday with nearly a hundred vendors peddling a host of handmade crafts and offering free how-to demos. Judging from the event's sassy slogan – "Not Yo Mama's Craft Fair" - the selection is sure to satisfy San Franciscans’ appetite for the oddball and offbeat.

This entertaining event has been loosening up the stuffy image of craft fairs since 2001 when it got its start in Boston. At this weekend's event, the wide-ranging medley of merchandise will include silk-screened shirts, glass art, lighting pieces, letterpress stationary, ceramics, jewelry, and even journals made from recycled books.

If you're left thinking "I wish I could do that" after strolling through the stalls, head over to one of the how-to workshops where artists will teach techniques including how to spiff up a boring button-down shirt, make zip-top shoulder bags, or use stencils and acid to do glass-etching.

In addition to the goods and demos, there'll also be entertainment from local DJs, making the $1 entry fee a buck pretty well-spent. All in all, the event is a great bet for scooping up gifts for anyone with eclectic tastes (yourself included of course) while checking out a slice of the local indie craft scene at the same time.
