DJ ICEY @ Mighty reviewed

So last weekend (08/03) I checked out the Fringe Arts Collective – “F-ing Arts” party at Mighty featuring DJ Icey and I gotta say... it was good fun.

Kraak & Smaak were supposed to play this event alongside breaks legend DJ Icey and I’m sure they would have torn the roof off, but due to Visa issues they couldn't get here (that’s the word I heard anyway). I was so ready for that cowbell from ‘Money in the bag’ but oh well, Sunset Promotions hooked up BLVD instead for some great live playing.

I arrived at Mighty at 11:30 pm, not sure who was playing the main room, but that was fine because I wondered to the back room…that’s where the art exhibition was showing and some great light breaks/chill music was playing. The club was busy but not packed and this felt like it could easily tip into an amazing party night. The paintings from the exhibit were nice, it’s all a taste thing and like everyone and their taste, I found some nicer than others but very cool stuff! BIG UPS to the artists who put their work out there. Always nice to see creative people at work!

BLVD started playing soon after that and I didn't love them at first but they grew on me after a while. They played a live set and they put on a good show... something about seeing a live band sweat it out on stage just makes me want to shake it. They were well coordinated and jamming away at a club…not an easy job. No visuals at all, the entire night had just the regular club lights. The sound was pretty good or as good as expected for a live played set in a club.

BLVD ends and after a few words from the organizers (“…people buy some art pep talk”), DJ Icey hopped on the decks about 1:15 AM. Immediately with the roaring tight funky synth bass line you could not mistake this to be anyone else. He threw down a nice set, with recognized tunes from his new album "Disco Rodeo". The floor filled up and people were dancing the night away to some raw FUNKY breaks.

Icey can still rock crowds, no doubt about it. Really funky set and great talent! I was seriously grooving, although I did wonder into the small room during his set and not sure who was playing but there were some heavy breaks and D&B coming out of that room… excellent tracks, wish I knew who the DJ was!! To sum it up this show was a good one. Fun party, friendly faces, not overcrowded and really great music. If you were wondering if Icey still has it, the answer is a definite yes.
