The Hotel Monaco in San Francisco is not necessarily hip, although it is well designed and cool in it's own way. A guest here feels like they are more part of a giant bed and breakfast than a hotel. There is a coffee hour in the mornings, a wine hour in the evenings, and a huge fireplace in the lobby. Many of these details are lost in larger hotels.
While the Monaco is not small (200 rooms), it feels small and personal. On the first floor is the Grand Cafe, a well known French Restaurant with a California flair. While this is a great restaurant, it doesn't give off the air of "fine dinning" that some of the higher end hotels have. For many people that's perfect, it allows them to actually relax a little bit and still do something to treat themselves. Also, like the Diva down the street, this hotel is pet friendly, but they go a step further. Below is an excerpt from their site: "The boutique Hotel Monaco in downtown San Francisco takes care of all its guests in style, including our four-legged friends, taking the term "pet friendly hotel" to a new level. Our luxury San Francisco hotel's pet friendly Bone-A-Petit package features bottled water, a dog bowl, Good Dog towels, top quality chew toys, gourmet dog cookies, Hotel Monaco's temporary dog tags and clean up bags. You can also request Lassie, Babe and Dr. Doolittle videos from our front desk. Can't bring Spot with you this time? Not to worry - the downtown Hotel Monaco San Francisco offers Guppy Love, a complimentary goldfish along with fish toys to keep you company during your stay with us. Our housekeeping staff has been trained to feed and take care of the goldfish - all you need to do is enjoy." Ok, so guppy love is not "hip" but it is pretty frickin cool.
