It’s the last day of your San Francisco sightseeing trip, you’re tired of roaming the concrete jungle, and are looking for an escape to clear your head. If this sounds like a problem you might get yourself into, the solution is obvious: pack a daypack and go to the Marin Headlands, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, located right across the Golden Gate Bridge.

If you have ever seen stunning pictures of the San Francisco skyline or of the Golden Gate Bridge, chances are they were taken in the Marin Headlands. Perfect for tourists who want to take that one perfect snapshot of the city, the Headlands have many places for photo opps. But what many don’t realize is that the Marin Headlands have plenty of hiking trails along the massive cliffsides, perfect for a day hike and escape from the city. There are also many species of birds there for any ‘Frisco birdwatchers.

When going to the Headlands, be sure to pack a jacket—oftentimes the Pacific Ocean breezes will cause fog, wind, and cold weather. But don’t let that deter you from experiencing the San Francisco skyline at one of the overlooks or the Marin trails complex, all of which is right in San Franciscians’ backyard.

Directions to the Marin Highlands Visitor Center: Go north on highway 101, Take the Alexander Ave. exit (second exit after crossing the bridge), Stay to the right on the exit ramp to get onto Alexander Ave. Turn left on Bunker Rd. (a brown sign saying “Marin Headlands Visitor Center” marks the intersection). Go through the one-way tunnel and drive approximately 2 miles, Turn left onto Field Rd. The visitor center will be on the right side of the road.
