Spanning the sonic spectra, the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival offers 5 evenings of electrifying performances at the Project Artaud Theatre (450 Florida Street, San Francisco) by both internationally recognized and emerging composers and musicians in the electronic music field.

The SFEMF was designed as an annual multi-day event consisting of concerts, installations, and discussions, with a focus on independent artists whose innovative auditory productions challenge academic and commercial standards. As the only festival dedicated solely to electronic music, this fest will bring together the varied practices of artists working with laptop generated sound, processed live acoustic instruments, amplified found objects, projected video, improvisation, and performance art.

On Wednesday Sept. 5, Mexican composer Murcof’s (Fernando Corona) sparse, minimalist, sample-based electronica and the duo .pig’s live sound experimentation, will be kicking off the 2007 festival in a special evening sponsored by San Francisco’s NEXMAP– a new San Francisco non-profit organization dedicated to the production and appreciation of contemporary and experimental performing arts.

The next night, Sept. 6, offers performances by MaryClare Brzytwa, Univac and Tim Hecker. Brzytwa a composer, aspiring rock star and ex catholic-school girl will take listeners through noise, salsa, improvisation, microtonality, rock guitar licks, and laptop manipulations. Univac, turns electronic toys inside out to make instruments for his compositions and Canadian born famed techno producer Tim Hecker will perform what has been described as “structured ambient” and “cathedral electronic music.”

On Sept. 7, L.A. based Leticia Castaneda, will bring her own form of solo improvisational and compositional aural art. Performances by Canadian cellist Zoë Keating, Les Stuck, veteran Bay Area electronic music producer J. Lesser will round out the evening.

Saturday Sept. 8, SFEMF will present two renowned, New York-based, electronic music pioneer composers, Annea Lockwood and David Behrman. Lockwood and Behrman will offer up 3 west coast premiers; “Jitterbug” and “Long Throw” with percussionist William Winant as well as “Bow Falls” with video by Paul Ryan.

The last day of the festival, Sept. 9, will feature; Alaska psychedelic noise underground veteran Nommo Ogo, video, installation and music composer Kadet Kuhne w/ Mem1 and songwriter, composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith with dancer, and clarinetist Patrice Scanlon.
