Name: Ferry Building
Address: 1 Ferry Building, The Embarcadero
When one thinks of San Francisco landmarks, the Ferry Building usually isn’t the first site that comes to mind. Literally overshadowed by the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge, it’s no surprise that sightseers pass up the Ferry Building and head straight for the bridges. But if you look a little deeper into the life of this building, you can see why the Ferry Building ranks high up on the list of historic landmarks of our fair city.
Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Ferry Building served as the means with which San Franciscians commuted to Marin up until the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge were built. Since its 1989 erection it has withstood the shocks of the 1906 and 1989 San Francisco earthquakes, and has since evolved into a multiuse building, complete with restaurants and office buildings. Nevertheless, it still serves true to its roots and continues to shuttle commuters across the Bay.
The historic Ferry Building has recently been renovated, yet its history still remains vibrant. Even if you aren’t planning on taking a ferry trip across the bay, check out the attractions within the building, including San Francisco’s largest farmers market, held on weekends and Friday nights. Located on the Embarcadero, the Ferry Building is a hidden historic gem that serves as a great change in the typical sightseeing experience.
