Surya Dub Halloween Mashdown - United by Dub

Surya Dub is pulling out all the stops when it comes to their bass driven sound, and especially at their upcoming Halloween event at Club Six this Saturday night. Drawing crowds, winning acclaim, and doing it all for the good of the Dub MASSIVE. Maneesh the Twister gave Metrowize a moment out of his busy schedule to comment on the upcoming “Halloween Mashdown” and the latest with Surya Dub. Here's what he had to say.

(Metrowize): What are you dressing up as this Halloween?
(Maneesh): Well not sure but it will def have something to do with a wig…prob not too much makeup as that can get messy on the knobs, wires and records!

(Metrowize): Say I've never been to a Surya Dub production, what should I expect at the "Halloween Mashdown"?
(Maneesh): People can expect nothing they’ve ever witnessed before because there is no other party like Surya Dub in the country. This week alone we have talent from 4 different states with 2 rooms and multiple genres over the course of a night from reggae/dancehall to dubstep, breakbeats, and drum’n’bass to bhangra and other global beats, so there really is something for everyone. Also there is usually a nice assortment of Dreads, Dubstep Headz, Burning Man folks, underground club kids, staple reggae folks and a bit of international flare so it helps create a more open-minded and creative atmosphere for the artists. Come ready for the bass shake!

(Metrowize): What makes this night different from others?
(Maneesh): Also because the party is built on the music a lot more people really come for that and not so much of a meat markety Saturday night thing which definitely enhances the vibe. Plus we have 10+ folks in the crew and everyone has been playing or producing music for over 10 years so there is definitely a quality standard that not many other events can compare to.

(Metrowize): How did Club Six come to be your venue for this event?
(Maneesh): Well I used to also run the Dhamaal Collective until it dissolved last year and we were one of the first parties to start doing events at Club six over 6 years ago. Angel Cruz the owner has been a great supporter of everything I have done and has really been a driving force for both Surya Dub and Dhamaal. Plus Club Six is one of the only places in the city to hear the Dread Bass music that we play properly on 18 Subs!

(Metrowize): Surya Dub just won SFweekly's Best Club Night 2007. Does this up the ante for next year?
(Maneesh): We are definitely honored to have recently been selected by the SF Weekly Music Awards as BEST CLUB NIGHT in San Francisco! Having been around less than a year makes this even more special that we have been recognized as one of the most innovative and ground-breaking nights amongst our highly respected San Francisco club scene. In fact Surya Dub was the only underground night even nominated. I think this just proves that the city’s artistic scene is bubbling again and people are ready for new and exciting events that aren’t the same status quo club nights and same djs. Some people questioned my concept of trying to unify different musical communities based on Dub, but it seems that people are getting it and finding it quite refreshing and we plan to keep pushing the envelope.

(Metrowize): You've got some big time performers this year, with Jason Mundo and MC Zulu. Any insight into who you're looking to bring in the future?
(Maneesh): Well we have really been focusing on quality and unique talent and bringing different types of artists together for example Jason Mundo who is arguably one of the top stateside Dubstep producers at the moment alongside MC Zulu who has recorded with hip hop artists such as Aceyalone, Kool Keith and Jamaican Dancehall vocalists. As we grow and it becomes more viable we definitely would like to present talent from the UK, Asia, and beyond!

(Metrowize): Now that the Castro party is "officially" done with, do you think that will have an impact on club nights around SF during Halloween?
(Maneesh): Well this weekend definitely looks like it is going to be insane and I really think that especially when Halloween falls midweek the weekend parties will go off. I think people will avoid the Castro and go to house parties on Halloween but will really do it up big this weekend.
