Tangier Restaurant and Lounge
By: Faith Choyce 05/29/08Located in hipster haven du jour Los Feliz, Tangier is a mainstay for locals and visitors-in-the know looking for a low-key place to unwind with a select group of friends before a night on the town. Tangier’s unassuming façade belies the subtly exotic décor of the main dining room, rich with warm hues, private booths, and soft accent lighting.
The appetizers are standard fare and popular with the happy hour crowd; though the tender, delicately battered Tempura Calamari and full-bodied Crab Rolls stand out as notable favorites. You won’t find Moroccan cuisine on the menu, as one would expect from the name, but there is something for everyone, from the requisite 8 oz. Angus burger with fries to a plentiful Grilled Vegetable Platter to the adventurous Pan Seared Halibut accented with clams, couscous, and choritzo. Vino fans will be impressed by an extensive and well-selected wine list featuring over 40 domestics and imports, though by-the-glass options pale in comparison.
Live entertainment can be found within the intimate lounge on any given night of the week, and shows vary from up and coming bands and singer/songwriters to standup comedy and improv. The servers and bartenders are friendly and attentive, and distinctly unpretentious, and after 6pm guests can also enjoy the full menu at one of the two bars or on the oasis-inspired outdoor courtyard/patio.
Dress up or dress down, pre-party or late dinner, it’s fine either way at Tangier. The inviting atmosphere, quality local entertainment and creatively prepared California Cuisine make this Eastside hotspot a destination worth exploring.
