Treasure Island Music Festival
By: Theo Miller 09/04/07The first ever Treasure Island Music Festival featuring Thievery Corporation, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, Gotan Project, M.I.A., Ghostland Observatory, Kinky and Zion I, Modest Mouse, Spoon, Built To Spill, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, M. Ward, and Two Gallants to name but a few is just around the corner here in San Francisco. On September 15th and 16th, Another Planet Entertainment along with Noise Pop, will transform the grounds of Treasure Island into an outdoor festival venue complete with hot bands, great food, rare merchants, and surprise activities.
“How often do you get to spend two days seeing amazing music while standing literally smack dab in the middle of the Bay?” asks Jordan Kurland, one of the festival’s organizers. Kurland has been an important force in bringing great rock shows to San Francisco in the form of Noise Pop, one of the nation's longest-running independent music festivals. When asked how Kurland went about selecting which bands would perform, he replied, “Treasure Island is going to be a much more intimate experience than people are used to having at outdoor festivals and we need to make sure the bands would fit this mold.”
On Saturday, you have your choice of electronic acts like Thievery Corporation, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, Gotan Project, M.I.A., Ghostland Observatory, Kinky and Zion I. On Sunday, indie rock takes charge with Modest Mouse, Spoon, Built To Spill, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, M. Ward, and Two Gallants. If that’s not enough for you, you can also find up and coming talent on the second stage all weekend long.
Now it wouldn’t be a Northern California music festival without acknowledging the importance of protecting the environment. In fact, Ralph Nader would approve of all the efforts being made in the name of preserving our planet. There are complimentary zero-emission buses to get you to the island, bio-diesel generators to run the show once you’re there, and when purchasing tickets you are encouraged to donate an extra dollar to offset CO2 emissions.
Finally, we have a live music festival in the spirit of Bay Area. Never before have we been given the opportunity to indulge in the music we love with such great surroundings. Kurland breaks it down like this, “We couldn't have dreamed up a better spot than Treasure Island with its amazing view of the San Francisco skyline, both bridges, and Alcatraz.”
