Even though the culture of fitness reigns supreme in Los Angeles, this city's inhabitants have a huge blind spot when it comes to burgers. From late night In-n-Out, to gastropub gourmet and everything in between, Angelenos definitely have an appetite for big meaty burgers. In honor of this seemingly schizophrenic view towards fitness and food, we have compiled a list of burger bars for your next “cheat” day, when you put your carb-free diet on hold and are willing to pack on a few extra calories.
Umami Burger started out small, but within a few years, the fifth “taste” sense oriented burger joint exploded into every neighborhood in Los Angeles. Now, Downtown LA, DTLA's Arts District, Santa Monica, Los Feliz, LAX and Laguna each have their own locations, with a few spots even combining Umami's tasty burgers with fresh cocktails, a large selection of beer and all the pickeled, salted and smoked pig parts you can handle. If you haven’t been yet, opt for the original Umami Burger with shiitake mushroom, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, parmesan crisp, and umami ketchup. There are plenty of favorites at Umami, but the original captures the spirit of what Umami Burger is doing.
Nestled in a strip mall on Cahuenga, Stout not only offers delicious burgers at your disposal, but also provides one of the largest and expertly curated beer selections in the city. Stout serves both beef and chicken burgers, and packs them full of excellent toppings. Try the Goombah, with parmasiano flakes, smoked mozzarella, crispy prosciutto, and lemon basil aoli - perfectly paired with a crisp Belgium brew. If you’re going the chicken route, get your hands on the Island hopper, completed with smoked mozzarella, artichoke spread, arugula, and roasted tomatoes.

Before Umami made it across the country, there was The Counter in Santa Monica. The Counter is one of few place where you can customize your burger by category, with gourmet options like herbed goat cheese, horseradish cheddar, mixed greens, roasted chiles, grilled pineapples, applewood smoked bacon, apricot sauce, chipotle aioli. The list goes on. The beer and wine selection is just as superb. Don’t forget to order some onion strings or sweet potato fries on the side to make your Counter experience a real one.
Various LA Locations
The Roosevelt Hotel is one of the all-in-one hotspots where you can not only swim in a luxury pool, bowl in a private bowling alley while sipping on craft punch, and hang out in a uber cool lounge, but also chow down at one of the finest burger bars in the west. At 25 Degrees, you can get a decadent late-night snack and boozy milkshake before heading home to crash. Give the “Number Two” a spin, a burger that will cover all your savory bases with roasted tomato, crispy prosciutto, and slathered in pesto sauce. Or, if you’re feeling creative, build your own!

Father’s Office is the west side’s response to places like Stout, offering a large craft beer selection and great food on top of that. For the most part, Father’s Office is known for their mouth-watering signature burger - perfectly-aged beef topped with two sickeningly delicious cheeses, carmelized onions, arugula, and bacon. Don’t act like reading that sentence isn’t making you hungry for a taste. Once you have a nibble, you’ll never go back to anything else.

Make a trip to the quaint little town of Eagle Rock for a visit to the Oinkster and you'll see what all the fuss is about.
