Ok, sure it's the dead of winter right now but the 2009 festival season is right around the corner. With major music events like Coachella, Bonnaroo, Ultra Music Festival and SXSW all a mere 3-4 months away, the speculation of who is headlining and at what festival is THE buzz on every major festival forum and blog.

Bonnaroo and Rolling Stone have already all but leaked that Phish will headline Bonnaroo 2009 for 2 nights as part of their reunion tour. While The Killers, The Cure and The Beastie Boys seem to be the front runners in the Coachella 2009 rumor mill. Ultra Music Festival 2009 (at the WMC in Miami) has also already released their initial offering with Tiesto, Bloc Party, Carl Cox and Cut Copy at the top of the bill. Although these exact headliners have not been confirmed, everyone seems to have viable theories as to why they are right.
With bands like Coldplay, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, Janes Addiction, Bruce Springsteen, The Pretenders, We Are Scientists, The Roots, The Beastie Boys, Tiesto, Bloc Party, Cut Copy, Carl Cox, Deadmau5, Justice, Soulwax, Boys Noize, Moby and even Britney Spears all touring this summer (or rumored to be touring this summer), there is no doubt that some (if not all) will take the stage at the biggest gatherings around the country. In fact, 2009 dates for Lollapalooza, Detroit Music Festival, Wakarusa, Harmony Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival and many other notables have already been released. Lineup announcements are soon to follow.
Questions still remain about Rothbury Festival 2009, but it appears that the show will in fact go on again at the financially troubled Double JJ Ranch. Also, rumor has it there will be dancing in Golden Gate Park again at San Francisco’s 2009 Outside Lands Music Festival (Radiohead headlined in 2008) but no official statement has been released yet about San Francisco's biggest concert event.
