Labor Day Weekend marks the unofficial end to summer but the fun doesn't stop in the city. Since the bay bridge is closed all weekend, you are likely stuck in the city, you might as well make the most of it so get out there and have some fun!
Thursday, Sept. 3rd
Audiofly @ Vessel
Audiofly are a DJ/producer duo, Luca Saporito and Anthony Middleton. They met and started working together in the spring of 2002 and embarked on a prolific partnership based on their shared musical styles and experiences on the global DJ circuit. Their combined talents have created a powerful, somewhat experimental and original style of music, (some have called it a ‘deadly Techno meets Electronic House’) that is very current on the underground club scene right now.
Mos Def w Eryka Bad @ Davies Symphony Hall
One of the more prolific lyricists of the 90's, Mos Def built a career around phat beats and better rhymes. Although he dissappeared from the music stage for a while to explore acting, he is back with a new album that is receiving the highest praises from all the right people. His mini tour promoting the new album is making 2 stops in the Bay with a show in SF on Thursday and one in Oaktown at the Paramount on Friday. Erykah Badu opens.
Friday, Sept. 4th
Matthew Dear @ Mighty
You could throw around generous descriptors and any number of genre-locking terms like electronic pop, minimal house or acid techno, but you'd still fail to get to the center of Matthew Dear. With releases under no fewer than three aliases, including False, Jabberjaw, and Audion, the Texas native has earned his international status over the course of a decade, flooring sold-out crowds at venues like Fabric, and releasing universally praised original productions. If you are a dance head, this is one not to miss.
Monterey Bay Reggae Festival
If you aren't super knowledgeable about the current heavy hitters of reggae then the performers at the Monterey Bay Reggae Festival might not be the selling point for you. Monterey Bay, holiday weekend, sun, good vibes, good music at a good price... you really can't go wrong. Add in the likes of Israel Vibration, Kevens, Ky-mani Marley, Don Carlos and about 50 other acts and you'll have a good time mon! Tickets are only $95 for a 3 day pass so if you are itching to ride natty ride, head on down.
Inland Knights and Andrew Phalen @ Temple
Andy Riley and Laurence Ritchie AKA Inland Knights hail from Nottingham UK, a city with a rich musical legacy, particularly for house music. Since the early 90's when they threw warehouse parties in the UK to starting a record label (Dropmusic) which is regarded as one of the strongest house music labels in the world, Andy and Laurence have been making their presence known in the dance community for nearly 20 years and for one night they bring their sounds to Temple with a little support from Andrew Phalen.
Saturday, Sept. 5th
Filo & Peri @ 1015 Folsom
New York natives Filo & Peri lead an enchanted life. Professional DJs and music producers since 2003, Filo & Peri broke onto the international dance music scene with a coveted ranking in DJ Magazine’s prestigious “Top 100 DJs Poll” for 2006 (coming-in at #77). The year 2006 saw the “world’s #1 DJ” Paul Van Dyk sign Filo & Peri’s “Ordinary Moment” to Vandit Records, as international sensation Erick Morillo signed Filo & Peri’s “Long Train Runnin’” to Subliminal Records, both having played Filo & Peri’s tracks live for months. It's only gotten better from there and they will show us why on Saturday night at 1015!
Starkillers @ Ruby Skye
It's rare when the label of "rock star" is justified in dance music, and refreshing when that success is backed up the musical talent, drive, and sincerity that is possessed by Nick Terranova (AKA Starkillers). His signature blend of catchy vocals, booming bass lines and genre-defying range will be on display at Ruby Skye Saturday and attendees will agree that the man is worth the hype.
Leisure @ Paradise Lounge
DJ's Aaron, Omar and Jet Set James bring SF's infamous 90's Britpop Party to a new home at the Paradise Lounge. Spinning Classic Britpop, Madchester and Hacienda Gems, Dancey Shoegaze and 60's Soul all night! It's a tripped out scene and always worth the measley $7 cover. Also, if you haven't seen it lately, the Paradise is going through a serious design overhaul that will bring the dance vibe back to this SOMA landmark.
Sunday, Sept. 6th
Labor D' Amour @ Cafe Cocomo
Hailing from Berlin--the city of a million DJ's--Sascha Funke is widely regarded as the standout amongst all of the artists and jocks that try to seal a place in the clubs, bars, festivals and warehouses of Germany. Blending an eclectic mix of House, Techno, and surprises worked in his DJ sets, he's the man that producers and DJ's go see on their nights off. He's only made one appearance in SF before and you ain't gotta work on Monday so shake it on down to Cocomo.
Dub Mission 13 Year Anniversary @ Elbo Room
Widely recognized as one of the most exciting and original artists working in dub today, multi-instrumentalist, producer and sound engineer Ryan Moore aka Twilight Circus Dub Sound has been involved with dub for the last 25 years. Moore's take on dub is a radical application of the ideology of dub pioneers like King Tubby, Lee Perry, and Augustus Pablo. He is the guest of the evening for the big 13th anniversary event of SF's best Dub and Reggae party.
