Belly dancers and beggars, dreadlocks and newborn hippies are all found in The Haight, which represents the iconic San Franciscan image of, “women with flowers in their hair.” Yes, the streets are lined with patchwork-clad people asking for change, but the idealism is gone. Instead in its place are delicious restaurants, trendy boutiques and a laid-back nightlife – sneakers welcome.

While you’ll find tourists taking pictures under the Haight-Ashbury street corner sign, those who are Haight-dwellers will be found eating Cha Cha Cha’s tapas, or The Citrus Club, slurping up their savory noodles. Beer is the beverage of choice and pitchers, along with large Hookahs, can be enjoyed at Massawa, which offers a unique blend of Mediterranean food at an affordable price. Though most things are low-cost in the neighborhood that inspired a counter-culture revolution, and shopping is a must whether you prefer thrift stores, tie-dye or the latest looks.

Ambiance and Isabel Shoes represent the dichotomy of style where sparkle platforms and goddess sandals are found in the same store. After your bags are full, Noc Noc and Toronado can help your fingers loosen off those shopping bags. Club Deluxe is another must where you can listen to Jazz music on a Sunday coming from a seven-piece concoction of singers and musicians. And of course, who can pass up the friendly bartenders at Hobson’s Choice, but be sure not to bring your lab-top as inebriation can make all of us forgetful, making for a difficult morning.

After you’ve soaked up the melodies, change keys and take a break at the Metro Hotel on Divisadero (between Oak and Page), just a few blocks away from all the action and the price resides in the key of Minor. Another hidden treasure that represents the areas congenial spirit is Inn 1890, located on Page Street. This welcoming hotel offers therapeutic beds, fully stocked kitchen, game room, laundry room, living room, etc.., creating another home for those who are just visiting, ensuring that these tourists will be back soon.
