Its 60 degrees out, the holiday display at Walgreens has changed to feature edible chocolate Christmas trees, there is an ice skating rink up near the Embarcadero center, the only snow in sight is in your 5th pocket, and finally, it's about time for the MetroWize Guide to holiday drinks.
So you've got your mistletoe set up and the David Bowie/Bing Crosby duet of little drummer bowie bumping on the turntables and party to throw. Let your buddies here at MetroWize set you up with some classic drink recipes that are sure to turn everyone's nose as red as Rudolph's.
The first one to make for your party is the traditional San Francisco staple - the Irish coffee. The Buena Vista (2765 Hyde St) has them on lock down but we'll share their magic recipe with you.
First brew some great coffee, obviously you're going to need it for the base of the drink. Then in either a coffee mug or a nice tempered glass add a sugar cube, then some Tilamore dew Irish whiskey (1.5 oz) and top it off with the coffee leaving about an inch on the top for some homemade whipped cream.
To make the whipped cream use 3 parts heavy whipping cream to 1 part sugar. It's easier to pour if you can put it in a squeeze bottle with a spout, then shake the shit out of it 'til it gets really thick in consistency, or whisk it 'til you achieve the same effect. Layer the whip cream on top of the drink and serve to all your soon to be stunned friends.
Next on the list is Hot Apple Cider with Spiced Rum. Get some cloves, cinnamon sticks and a couple gallons of Apple Cider from Trader Joes. In a large pot, mix all the ingredients 'til they achieve a rolling boil. Then in a mug, pour about two ounces of spiced rum, like Captain Morgan's, and pour in the hot cider. You don't want to mix the cider with the alcohol prior to the boiling process because you will risk the chance of boiling off the alcohol and kill the party.
Egg Nog is an easy, drinkable mix that we recommend making but not drinking more than the obligatory one or two. At MetroWize we're busy, so we cut corners by buying lots of pre-made stuff. Sure, we don't make our eggnog - or really even have the desire to google a recipe how to. But, we don't see you distilling your own whiskey. So there.
In a large punch bowl, add a bottle of bourbon to two gallons of eggnog.
Sprinkle on some nutmeg and take the credit.
You're friends will never know.
