The Kicks ethos resides on Fairfax between Huf and Hundreds. It’s gone beyond sneakers, taking inspiration from skateboard street culture, evolving into a fashion perspective that thrives on the basics: t-shirt with graffiti-inspired print, jeans, hoodies, caps, and flannels.
A little taste test following an ingestive rollercoaster at Pink’s, a few blocks away on LaBrea, offers an opportunistic digestive period. Let the spicy sausage, mushrooms, nacho cheese, onions, and bacon crawl their way through your belly while you coast for some fresh duds. You won’t run into vintage-clad hipsters - they live in Echo Park and can’t afford the prices. What it really comes down to is, are you looking to spin new school style, or are you a texture man?
HUF houses in a bright room. White walls, wood floors. It’s clean, neat, and organized, just like your sock drawer. If you like style and you read URB, then here’s where you can find a pea coat made from hoodie material. Nothing too outrageous in terms of construction, but definitely fresh and sure to be recognized by fellows in the know.
A bit west of HUF, off a side street, Hundreds has Looney Tunes emblazoned across its blacked-out glass doorway. The short walk past the kosher bakeries may tempt you with a pit stop for some bomb rugalach—a little sweet to counteract the salty dog turning into a brick headed towards your bum.
Finally, wiping crumbs off your face, press those greasy fingers against the door and enter the yang to HUF’s fluorescent lit atmosphere. Hundreds’ walls and floors are black, directing your attention to the skate and snowboard inspired threads hanging high on the walls. Hundreds is all about texture. They really emphasize designer man threads that feel soft and smooth. The styles remain as simple as HUF, with the exception that you can buy a neon snowboard outfit at Hundreds. Whereas HUF may focus more on graf, Hundreds likes clothes that feel like your favorite jersey sheets from college, before the beer stains and burn holes.
Overall, both stores have a lot to offer, and separated by a minute’s walk, there’s no reason why a shopping spree at Turntable Lab shouldn’t be complimented by blowing your payroll on the latest, selective, urban streetwear styles. If you like rubbing your face on your t-shirt for that Snuggle bear feel, hit Hundreds. If you’re into sporting the stylings of some dope high-end graphic designer, HUF will satisfy you better than that hot chick you met in the pool at Mondrian last night...well, maybe.
