This Week in LA 8/12 - 8/18

This Week in LA, the Love Fest and Fresh Fest keep things wild and crazy, while big old-timers Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, and Depeche Mode drop in for a visit. Find out what else you should pencil into your schedule, here.

Wednesday, August 12th

N.A.S.A. @ El Rey Theater
N.A.S.A.’s debut The Spirit of Apollo, reveals the local DJ/party maker Squeak E. Clean, along with companion DJ Zegon, as mix masters to be reckoned with. Expect special guests, a spaceship, aliens, and tons of strobe, as the dance jams kick into high gear.

Pilooski & Runaway @ The Roxy
Scion’s House Party goes disco this month with French visitors Pilooski & Runaway. In Flagranti and Thee Mike B add their two cents of electro mashing to the evening. RSVP is required.

Jackson Browne @ Greek Theater
This Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been kicking songwriting butt since 1972. Political and full of feeling, two of his albums, Late For the Sky and The Pretender, are on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” Nuff said, you may want to catch this while you can.

Thursday, August 13th

Mickey Avalon @ MyHouse
Mickey Avalon is sure to tell you all about “his dick” and Jane Fonda, shirtless, surrounded by scantily clad ladies and his rapping bros. The man is charming in that creepy, sleazy, way that you can’t deny.

Friday, August 14th

Does It Offend You, Yeah? @ Avalon/Bardot
Don’t be alarmed, there won’t be band with instruments crammed behind the DJ table at this week’s Control event. British band Does It Offend You, Yeah? will be spinning records, along with Keith 2.0 & Mr. White. Tickets are $10.

Henry Clay People vs Crooked Cowboy
On this night, Henry Clay, Fol Chen, and Flying Tourbillon have a circus themed show at Echoplex ($10), while Crooked Cowboy, Amanda Jo Williams, and Horse Thieves put on a cowboy show at Unknown Theater ($5). Who will reign supreme over bohemians, clowns or banditos?

Banco De Gaia @ Social Hollywood
Social doesn’t know what’s in store from Banco De Gaia and Kazell. Banco De Gaia has been producing tribal electronica for several decades. This show is the first stop on a national tour in support of upcoming album Memories, Dreams, Reflections.

Saturday, August 15th

The Fresh Fest @ Nokia Theater
For those who don’t know, Whodini emerged in the ‘80s NY rap scene, one of the first groups to add an R & B twist to their jive, laying a foundation for the new jack swing movement. “The Fresh Fest” also features 2 Live Crew, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, Naughty By Nature, and Slick Rick.

The Love Festival @ Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena
What goes better with love than the sense of home? Stretch that, how about house music to give you that love/home togetherness warmth in the form of sweat provided by Junior Sanchez, Miguel Migs, Sharam, Steve Angello, DJ Reza, and more.

Sunday, August 16th

Depeche Mode @ Hollywood Bowl
Depeche Mode fans are almost as hardcore as Morissey fans. In 1980, electronic music was all about the keyboard, and with 75 million albums sold and 45 songs in the UK Singles Chart, it’s safe to say, Depeche Mode mastered the form. Peter, Bjorn, and John will blow the roof off as an opener.

Monday, August 17th

The Flaming Lips @ Greek Theater
How many show-stopping bands can you fit on one bill? If Prince or Pink Floyd were playing as well, minds would explode. Flaming Lips are joined by the dazzling Ghostland Observatory, as well as Stardeath and White Dwarfs.

Tuesday, August 18th

Elvis Costello @ Greek Theater
Lucinda Williams opens for the inimitable Elvis Costello. He’s backed by the Sugarcanes, playing songs off his latest album Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, as well as favorites from his 30 year career.
