Major Lazer Listening Party @ Chateau Marmont

On a cool, dark, Wednesday night, Hollywood's infamous Bar at Chateau Marmont hosted a private-gone-bezerk listening party for Major Lazer's (aka Diplo and Switch's) new album, Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do. The duo set up shop on a makeshift DJ booth (really just a foldable table) and played tracks from the album, which is the pair's aggressive take on dancehall and dub, to a Red Stripe-slizzed crowd. Meanwhile, the soiree peaked at the intersection of high culture and street culture, as hand-crafted sliders, empanadas, cupcakes and spring rolls were gleefully served to the sneaker-clad crowd.

Diplo loves absurdity. The Philly-born producer, who takes his moniker from a childhood fondness for dinosaurs, had to love that his flurry of speaker-punishing mayhem juxtaposed itself against the posh confines of the Bar Marmont. Diplo also had to love that Marmont's taxidermied peacock watched overhead as an elegantly dressed Spank Rock soon burst out of his sheepskin to roar his filthy rhymes alongside Amanda Blank, Santigold and the ageless Twitter-lover Andy Milonakis-- perhaps questioning the bird's symbolism as proving the usually swanky clientele's position at the top of the food chain.

After Diplo and Switch played several ragga-tinged riddems so the crowd might sweat out the problems of the day, an all out intergalactic jam session ensued with Diplo's Philadelphia posse tearing into the mic, leading the party into oblivion, with people dancing on tables and glasses shattering. And perhaps the truest testament to the party's free-fall into insanity was poor old Switch not being allowed to re-enter after grabbing some fresh air out front.

Major Lazer returns to Los Angeles on June 27, 2009.
