All epic tales include an amazing comeback, and the resurrected Mayes Oyster House is one worth cheering for. First opened in 1867 in Polk Gulch on Polk (at Bush), Mayes has taken an old-school classic and updated it with contemporary seafood like sashimi, ceviche and carpaccio, seamlessly blending the classic standards with some modern novelties. Mayes turns from a restaurant into a bar and lounge later in the evenings, complete with late-night dining and a DJ. It's a multi-century remix that shows us millennials what partying meant in the '60s and 70s with a little 18th century flair thrown in for good measure.
When first entering Mayes (notice the original neon sign) it's hard to ignore the unique décor. It's a funky/sophisticated mixture of an 18th century seafarer's clubroom with stainless steel tables and leopard patterned, high-backed chairs. The huge fireplaces throughout the place make Mayes worthy of it's self-deemed title, “Cocktail Joint & Chill Spot.” The place boasts a lounge (which has a DJ friday and saturday nights), a full bar, raw bar and dining seating.
The menu takes classic seafood and dresses it up, with items like the Hawaiian Ahi Poke, Seared Diver scallops, and for those who prefer turf over surf, they have a a few delicious Kobe beef options, served with horseradish mashed potatoes. While the food is amazing, so are the prices: the Surf & Turf is the most expensive item on the menu ringing in at a mere $20. This is one old favorite you'll be glad has returned.
Get Wize Mayes has a Happy Hour from 4-6 with $1 oysters! The restaurant is located at 1233 Polk Street. Check out their website for more info.
