Motivated by the success of their sold-out show at Mezzanine, Mercury Soul has paired up with 111 Minna Gallery for a special Happy Hour event this Friday November 13th (Friday the 13th woot woot!) called Mercury Lounge.
Mercury Soul is a unique hodgepodge group comprised of a a DJ, DJ Masonic (aka Mason Bates), an artist, Anne Patterson, and the resident conductor of the SF Symphony, Maestro Benjamin Schwartz. Together they put on an innovative, groundbreaking event "combining a sinfonietta, DJs, lighting, and art installations in large, open-format venues". How these people managed to get together and decided to put on an event fusing electronica, classical music and art installations is beyond us, but it's a pretty cool concept.
Wondering how the hell you combine classical and electronica? That's sort of a legit question. They describe their sound as "short sets of classical music between jazzy downtempo, trip-hop, and house". Well, it's a little clearer, but this might be one of those experiences you have to see to understand. With Bates and Maestro Schwartz providing the music, and accompanied by MarsBassMan (aka David Arend) on the upright bass, artist Anne Patterson provides installations made of materials as diverse as neon, wood and aluminum.
GetWize: Mercury Lounge will take place from 5:00-9:00pm this Friday, November 13th at 111 Minna Gallery in the heart of downtown SF at, you guessed it, 111 Minna Street.
