So what do you get when a famous Vietnamese chef is turning out some traditionally American cuisine? According to patrons of Mikey’s Burgers in the Lower East Side, a pretty damn good burger infused with a Pan-Asian twist. While Mikey’s may look traditional with its white walls and old-school diner stools, you may be surprised when you bite into your burger. This no-frills joint sells them galore, with ballpark-worthy sides like chili fries served in aluminum trays, herb coleslaw and homemade soup. Short ribs, brisket, hot dogs, Chinese bacon, and lamb satay all have a spot at Mikey’s. What’s the most satisfying thing on the menu? We think it’s the cheaptastic prices—you can score dinner at Mikey’s for a cool five or six bucks. Don’t expect a brew with your burger—Mikey’s is alcohol-free—but wash all that meaty grub down with a toasted almond, avocado or black sesame shake. And you know the drill with these diner-types: open late (til 4 am on the weekends, perfect for some midnight munchies), cheap fare, cash only, and no reservations accepted. Wanna know more? Still no website, so your best bet is to call (212) 979-9211. Mikey's is located at 134 Ludlow Street.
Get Wize: Michael Huynh, aka Michael Bao, is the chef flipping the fare at Mikey’s. He also seems to be slowly taking over New York City, with restaurants like Bao 111, Baoguette (with so many outposts that we've lost track), BarBao, BiaGarden, and probably like 20 more restos. He was also apparently shot once and named himself after Michael Jackson, according to a revealing article in the New York Times. Uhhhh...
