It seems as though San Francisco is holding festivals and faires more often than P. Diddy changes names. This weekend is the North Beach Festival, which means that the great food the neighborhood is known for will be showcased.
Not to be confused with the North Beach Jazz Festival, this event will have food as the main attraction. Sure, there are crafts exhibitions and two stages with live entertainment, but North Beach has never been about crafts or even music. Food and drink from various restaurants will be presented around historic Washington Square Park and the closed-off 1200-1500 blocks of Grant Avenue, so once you've gotten thoroughly buzzed off of wine and Italian food you can feel free to stumble around the neighborhood without fear of getting hit by a passing car.
But what would a festival in North Beach be without its quirks? The neighborhood is known for its eccentricities, and that means that Tony Gemignani, world champion pizza tosser, will be back again this year for another high-flying display of pizza dough. After you're thoroughly impressed by him and begin to realize that the things you do in your life are just a little less cool, you can take your pet to the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi at Vallejo street for it to be blessed. No joke.
The festival will be going on the whole weekend, June 14 and 15 from 10 am to 6 pm, just in time for fathers day. So if you're looking to spend some time with your old man, looking for some great food while you soak up some sun, or are looking to make sure your dog reaches the afterlife unscathed, check it out.
