Ocean Beach San Francisco Style
By: Vanessa Touset 07/22/08Ocean Beach isn’t exactly known for suntans or bikinis. San Franciscans have a different beach scene. Stretching across the entire west side of the city, Ocean Beach is one of the sickest surf spots in California, though you wouldn’t think of enjoying it without at least 4mm of neoprene between you and the waves. If you’re brave, stick around til’ nightfall for the sometimes-decent sunsets. Those of us who can’t hang in the icy shark water bundle up and admire the surfers, run around with our dogs off leash, or dart across the Great Highway to Park Chalet to warm up with a hot tottie in front of the blazing stone fireplace.
Park Chalet. Nothing beats it on a sunny day. And nothing beats it on a cloudy day when you forgot to bring your hat, scarf and gloves to Ocean Beach. Park Chalet is known for its fresh music scene, its small plates California coastal cuisine, and its great beer selection. Hipsters, families, hip families, dogs and neighborhood locals all mingle with the tourists and beach bums and groove to the live music. There are lounge chairs and benches with table service outside or you can bring a blanket and sit in the grass. If you go on a Saturday between 4-7pm, you’ll be chillin' to the unique Latin jazz sounds of the Bayonics. The combination of oldies R&B along with smooth Latin-funk rhythms and off the top lyrics all come together to represent that laid back Bay Area vibe. If you’re lucky, one of the talented Chalet servers might even jump up and spit a rhyme or two on the microphone (Yes, this really happens). You can also enjoy margarita specials on Taco Tuesdays with live funk, reggae or surf music.
Leave it to San Francisco to redefine what ‘going to the beach’ actually means.
