From sex to music to pirates, San Francisco’s “underground” scenes are as varied as its micro climates. The new Potrero Del Sol Skate Park brings a traditionally underground scene into the sun and lures San Francisco skateboarders back home from their journeys to Pacifica, Sunnyvale, Berkeley and beyond.
A longtime international headquarters for street skating, San Francisco now has its very own good old-fashioned skate park at Potrero and 25th streets in the Lower-Potrero-Hill-Outer-Mission-Northern-Bernal district. Pro skaters like Mike Carrol and San Francisco OG’s like James Kelch, as well as The Gav himself (our mayor for those non political readers), were there to kick off the festivities and you’ll still catch Thrasher’s Jake Phelps cruising around.

The park has a sick bowl that is very skateable for all levels, not just the rippers, and the rest of it is wide open for street and transition. There’s a lot of flat bottom but the surface is so slick that you can pick up good speed with minimal push. The company behind the design is Grindline who are regarded as some of the best skatepark designers in the country. Other Grindline parks can be found all over the country, each one unique and at the same time equally awesome.
Huge green lawns and hills let you hang out and watch some of the raddest skaters around do their thang… If you’re feeling inspired, you may go grab a board and try it yourself. Or, you can just stop by the Potrero Market across the street, grab a couple tall boys, brown bag it and kick back in the green. The park is located in one of the warmer and sunnier neighborhoods we have here in SF (It’s called Potrero Del Sol for a reason), so if you need an escape from the chill, it’s a safe bet.
Whether you’re just looking for something to do outside of the bars or you’re the skater who has been waiting for this park for years—This is the spot! Sun, Skate – Sold!
