Guide to Day Drinking
By: Logan B. 03/17/09What is it about lunch hour and martinis that go hand in hand? Sure, you've got an hour to escape that cubicle or operating room, classroom or courthouse but what's more important on a Tuesday in the afternoon than curing Monday night's hangover? Obviously in this economy it might not be the responsible thing to do - but at Metrowize we'd like to think if day time drinking is wrong then we don't want to be right.
So, like tonic to gin here's our list of the five best places to drink during your lunch hour. We've kept the list downtown because we know that's where majority of people are from 11-1pm.
Irish Bank
(415) 788-7152
10 Mark Ln
San Francisco, CA 94108
This is a brick by brick homage to Ireland and Guinness. Great sturdy Irish fare plays well with big Irish stouts in a relaxed power drinking atmosphere. The bank contains all the things we look for in a day time drinqaria - Semi secluded, dark-ish, mob types and lastly its loud. Sneak sips of Jameson in the confessional styled booth while you think about those TPS reports and your coffee slurping boss. Just make sure you bring the visine and breath mints for your triumphant return back to work.

Zazil Mexican Cuisine
(415) 495-6379
845 Market St Ste 400
San Francisco, CA 94102
Oh man, we feel guilty just telling you about our new favorite spot. It's a restaurant in the mall with a killer tequila selection. Like such rare tequila that Tres Agaves and Tommy's don't even carry these types of bottles - our favorite tequila in the world El Reformador - $11 for a shot of reposado. We don't know what the food tastes like but the tequila and sangrita chasers are outstanding. Plus your in the mall so know one would suspect your getting your slur on right in front of everyone. As long as you can stumble out work will go by some much quicker on a tequila buzz. Que Viva! Brush up on your tequila skills before you hit Zazil with our Tequila Guide.

Grumpy's American Pub
(415) 434-3628
125 Vallejo St
San Francisco, CA 94111
If you work for any of the broadcasting corporations or in advertising then you already know of this little gem and accordingly we apologize for blowing your scene. For the uninitiated Grumpy's is a sweet dive bar for day time drinking. It's not crazy busy during lunch times and no one will raise an eyebrow at those Martinis you're downing faster then Dean Martin at an open bar. It's an easy place to drink where suits and chucks co-mingle without making eye contact. They serve food, but for most of us an olive is enough.
Chevys Fresh Mex
(415) 543-8060
201 3rd St
San Francisco, CA 94103
Yes it's a chain, yes it's cheesy and yes you wouldn't want to be caught dead there by any of your friends - which makes it another ingenious place to get some heat on midday. We're aware of the fact that there are two Mexican places on the list but we don't know any French places that serve fishbowl margaritas for around ten bucks. Slink into the bar, order up an Ultimate margarita, close your eyes and let every sip take you back to that time in Cabo when you hung out with Sancho and the mariachi band on the beach. The food is surprisingly great, the tortillas are fresh and once again we stress that the Margaritas are jumbo. After your second one ask for no ice. They'll do it and it will be awesome. Just a word to the wise, don't get your Margs blended ever - its just a slushy with less booze.
Gold Dust Lounge
(415) 397-1695
247 Powell St
San Francisco, CA 94102
This is the premier drinking destination for the discretionary imbiber. Its right downtown, sometime is touristy but for under three bucks you can get your fill of Irish Coffees, Mimosas or Margaritas. They're practically begging you to fail your back to work breathalyzer. Its an amazing San Francisco scene of locals, out of townees, crazy people and musk. The Gold Dust is a love letter to all thats right about drinking during the day. Its hidden in plain view of everything, just grimy enough to make sure the big wigs of your company won't stop by, only takes cash so you can be untraceable and surrounds you with a comfortable cast of fellow followers of Bacchus.
