Singles Guide to San Francisco
By: Suzi Robinson 08/31/08Single peeps in SF can check their whining at the gate, as the city by the bay has long been ranked the number one singles spot in the nation (Forbes Magazine). From the Marina Safeway, AKA “Dateway” to the more desperate Table for Six, there is no excuse for sitting at home.
Outside of the usual singles blahbatty blah, Urban Diversion is a hands on organization that creates a wide range of activities- hiking, sailing, Friday night mixers, poker games, motorcycle rides. . . you name it and they pretty much do it. This club draws singles like flies to honey, and is geared toward a good time. There are several non-member activities, including monthly socials (free wine!).
If you are not afraid to own that “Single” status, The Society of Single Professionals, centered in the Bay Area, host a number of swanky events including wine tasting, mixers, dance parties, etc. Their website is home to various links to other dating sites and they have an extensive calendar of Singles events for the entire bay area.
Gay and Single? Check out www.sfalist.com for their weekly A-List Martini Night schedule. Founded in 2006, this traveling gay singles party has been taking over a new venue every Wednesday for an upscale mix n mingle. With the names A-List and Martini in the title, chances are this will be a good place to meet someone.
Film night in the Park is a premier meeting spot for the unattached. A free event held at Union Square, Dolores Park (the best) and Washington Square, bring some wine and cheese, or a few beers and kick it under the stars with your favorite vintage flick.
Coffee shops are yet another tried and true hub for singles, and if you’ve never been to Blue Bottle Coffee Co. (Hayes Valley) now’s your chance! Coffee served in bohemian like fashion out of a garage! Offbeat ingredients and frothy designs in your latte’ foam make this a popular shop. Philz Coffee (Castro, SOMA), and Crossroads Café (at Brannon St) are also worth a stop.
For those of you who like to dance, The DNA Lounge hosts a party called Bootie twice a month where all of the music is bootlegged or manipulated. This event has won numerous "best party" awards from various bay area publications and is a step up from the usual club fodder and a great place to groove to mashed up oldies. For more options, look into Mr. Smith’s (7th st), Le Colonial (Nob Hill), Beauty Bar (aka Booty Bar) and Little Baobab (restaurant which morphs into a club after 10).
So there you have it. If you are single and not having fun in the “Cool Gray City of Love” it is all on you. The SF Bay Area is a Mecca for the solo artist, so stop whining about how hard it is to meet people, and get out there!
