Save Medjool San Francisco
No More Medjool?

The future of Medjool's rooftop bar in the Mission seems meek at best. As of last Friday, April 24th, the restaurant/bar's owner, Gus Murad is facing daily fines of $250 for keeping the bar open. According to San Francisco's city planning department, there was never any special permission given to Medjool for the operation of a rooftop bar. Planning policy in the area does not allow bars or restaurants to be built or operated above the second floor.

Medjool's rooftop bar is a mission favorite with its panoramic views of the city and across the bay, but unfortunately a view that good can only be found on the fifth floor. Gus Murad's request for a review of the bar by the city's Planning Director was rejected last week and although he can repeal the decision, if he loses he will have to pay the fines accrued since April 24th.

The "Save Medjool" campaign signs can be seen around the city and those in favor of keeping Medjool open and operational call for the planning department to allow an exception to the second-floor bar rule.
