It's not everyday that a new venue opens in San Francisco. For this reason, we're sitting on our hands over at MetroWize and eagerly awaiting the grand opening of SOM on November 6th. The crew behind SOM has been working with ninja stealth on this project for almost a year and details are just beginning to come out. A post on Twitter says the music at SOM will be "everything from hip-hop, electro, disco, latin, house, to satanic polka trance speed metal". We understood everything except the last one- sheer curiosity and mild confusion warrant a visit.
Does 2925 16th street @ S. Van Ness sound familiar? That's because SOM is opening in the space of what used to be Pink (and before Pink it was Liquid). Pink closed back in January and there has been much speculation about what would open behind the mysterious plywood wall. We've found out some details, like the existence of a massive 50 ft. walnut bar, leather booths, a dancefloor, one wall made entirely of old wine bottles and an outdoor patio.
The best feature of the place is what they call the "Shotwell": a cash-only spot at one end of the bar where you can avoid the line and quickly purchase shots and beers...we're a little scared for our livers but pumped about the idea. SOM has also announced a slew of hot local DJ's who will be spinning in the near future, including Chuey Gomez, DJ Apollo, Proof, King Most, Distortion to Static, Relevant Sound, Carlos Mena and El Honor Roll.
GetWize: According to Twitter, SOM is "kind of open":
Soft openings are taking place all week, with the bar open from 4:30-10:00pm, at which point it turns into a club from 10:00-2:00am. Their website is still under construction (so freakin' mysterious!) but check back- we're sure it'll be up and running soon.
