Skirball Cultural Center presents its 13th free Sunset Concerts series of world music, bringing some amazing, exotic, and definitely mind-blowing talent to their outdoor stage. In many cases, the performers have either never been to Los Angeles or even to the United States. On Thursdays in July and August at 8:00 p.m., the music may be the main event, but Skirball will keep its galleries open, currently featuring two exhibitions on comic books: “ZAP! POW! BAM! The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books, 1938–1950,” and “Lights, Camera, Action: Comic Book Heroes of Film and Television.” Don’t eat beforehand because Zeidler’s Cafe will offer a buffet dinner serving cuisine from the region of that night’s performers. –“Excuse me, there’s a marimba in my soup!”
GetWize: The lineup is as follows: Issa Bagayogo’s Malian electronica (7/16), bluegrass meets Swedish folk by Mike Marshall/Darol Anger/Väsen (7/23), Montreal’s Roma and Klezmer inspired Gadji-Gadjo (7/30), Mardi Gras Indian ensemble from New Orleans The Wild Magnolias (8/06), Sufi multi-instrumentalist from Turkey Omar Faruk Tekbilek Ensemble (8/13).
