It's May finally, and time for the spring edition of Joshua Tree Music Festival. At this dust and rainbow-spirited soiree in the desert, you are most likely to get complimented on your aura and learn how to hoola-hoop with your neck. The music is jam-based with shreds of world sounds, jazz, folk, and even hip-hop. Last year, beat-boxing was a hot trend. The fest has an organic flavor, and will most likely serve delicious, fresh, food to keep your energy up for sarong tug-of-war.

Some of the standouts on May's lineup include Echo Park's Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, with music for a bonfire surrounded by tiny guitars; Nortec Collective - electronics meets Mexican street music; Holland's Kraak & Smaak’s psychedelic live-drum funk; Extra Golden weaving Kenyan Benga music and American rock; and tons more local and international bands with strange names and sounds to match. The craziest name award definitely goes to Gandalf Murphy & the Slambovian Circus of Dreams.

The three-day festival has added a few new perks: Free water if you provide a re-usable vessel for drinking, but a paper cup does not count. There's 3,000 sqare feet of more shade in the music bowl for a total of 13,000 sq ft of canopy to dance under. Interactive and 3-D art installations will surround the lake, making the walk between the campgrounds and the music bowl that much longer with trippy distractions. You can get a rubdown at the Lux Lounge during the day or chill out when it transforms into an ambient lounge at night. For the drinkers, the Boogaloo Saloon will be stocked with organic microbrews & wine on tap. Finally, show off your muscles at the Festival Olympics, "aka Random Technical Challenges," and win prizes. You can take home so much more than a bad tan line the weekend of May 15-17, perhaps even a hickie.
