Ready to experience the sushi lover’s nirvana? Step into Urasawa, chef Hiro Urasawa’s 10-seat restaurant. When you are ready to drop $250 (that's the lowest possible price and doesn't include tax, tip or drinks- in reality be prepared to spend upwards of $500) for a journey through over 30 courses of omakase (aka the chef's selections) - starve yourself for the day, grab your wallet and fight Rodeo Drive traffic to get here- because few places are able to maintain a perfect 5 star yelp rating and have received 2 Michelin Stars.
And yes, I did say 10-seats. The setting is simple and austere – it is meant to showcase the extraordinary food. Chef Urasawa will lead you through a treasure trove of unusual combinations, rare ingredients flown in from all over, and the best in Japanese cuisine. Since this is omakase, there is no set menu. The items served are dictated by the freshest produce and Chef Urasawa’s interests of the day. What you can expect are combinations like silky sesame seed tofu topped with beluga caviar and 24-karat gold flakes (we didn't know gold was edible!). The restaurant is also known for its unusual sashimi (shiro ebi nigiri and shitake nigiri, for example. Heard of those? Us neither.) served on hand-carved blocks of ice. An extensive selection of premium cold sakes, champagnes and wine (and a few beers) are offered to heighten the experience.
For the maximum of ten diners at a time, there are usually 5 people helping, and you practically have your own chef. If you are ready to be led through sushi lands previously unvisited- with a guide as creative, generous and exacting as Hiro-san – make that reservation ASAP.
GetWize: Be prepared to spend a number of hours (up to 6 hours) and around $500+ per person (including tax, tip, drinks). It ain’t cheap, but it is definitely easier than flying to Japan. Urasawa is located at 218 N. Rodeo Drive. Also, Chef Urasawa is one of the very few chefs in the US licensed to serve blowfish – so go for it! To make reservations we recommend calling a week ahead. Their number is: (310) 247-8939.
