Vessel is one of the most recent additions to the bustling Union Square nightlife scene. Envisioned by one of the top designers in the hospitality industry, Stephane Dupoux, Vessel’s interior serves as an impressive example of modern design. The lounge occupies 4,500 square feet of subterranean space beneath Giorgio Armani and Niketown. It looks fairly nondescript from the outside but quickly reveals a sophisticated ambiance to patrons as they descend the stairs into a room with gleaming silver accents and hard, clean lines. A charming, exposed brick wall provides warmth to the room and helps temper the ultramodern touches. The whole space has an open layout that encourages people to circulate throughout the room. Low, polished wood tables with comfy seating fill out the edges and surround a nice sized dance floor that anchors the middle of the room.
Cocktails tend to be on the expensive side so don’t show up expecting to pay dive bar prices. The bartenders mix stiff drinks and they carry a nice selection of top shelf liquor so it’s worth the few extra bucks. Vessel also features table service complete with gourmet hor d’oeuvres, which makes the venue a great place to bring a large group of friends.
The music switches off between hip-hop and house and occasionally the lounge will pull in well-known names like Morgan Geist and the Glimmers. Local DJ faves, Richard Oh? and Sleazemore, host Infatuation every Wednesday and Friday nights and always feature quality hip-hop DJ’s. Vessel’s chic and classy atmosphere along with its proximity to major clubs like Mezzanine and Ruby Skye make it a great place to start the evening off.
Vessel is located at 85 Campton Place between Sutter & Post @ Union Square.
