Yamo: No Frills Burmese Eats

When you have your choice of trendy, upscale Mission eateries, why on earth would anyone walk into this tiny ‘hole in the wall’ sandwiched between a hair salon and a smoke shop? Because the ‘holes in the walls’ are where you find the real gems. Yamo is no exception. No sign, no credit cards, no frills; just a simple counter that fits 9 people (tightly).

The menu is Burmese food and for those unfamiliar, it’s strongly influenced by Chinese, Indian and Thai food, yet maintains its own unique flavor. The menu at Yamo is broken into two basic categories: appetizers and chef’s selections and the prices on these items are amazing. One person can eat very well for under $10. While there are the more familiar appetizers, go for the Samusas (curried potato dumplings), which are lighter and different than their Indian cousin, the Samosa, because they are wrapped in won ton skin and come with a sweet, spicy chili sauce. The Yamo House Noodles are also a good choice: A very simple dish of noodles, a choice of meat, green onions, crispy garlic and cilantro. Add a dash of soy sauce, a squeeze of Sriracha and a bit of the cucumber, red onion and cabbage garnish that accompanies it and you’re set. To top it off, have the fresh coconut drink, which is literally a whole coconut with the top chopped off and a straw stuck in it. Although the food is mild to moderately spicy, the coconut milk helps cool it down a bit.

Even though Yamo is certainly lacking in décor, its simplicity works. What more do you need? The food is tasty and fresh and the atmosphere is cozy. That being said, the service is as to be expected. With one woman to cook on the stove and one to take orders, get drinks, garnish the dishes, make appetizers, settle checks, answer the phone and be cordial to the customers, these ladies have their hands full. Be patient - you water will get refilled.

Once you walk through the door the fragrant smells of the food will diminish all apprehension of the appearance. The real trouble is finding it (hint: 3406 18th St.). Don’t blink or you’ll miss it!
